A Fort Benning soldier who died Thursday at St. Francis Hospital has been identified as Spc. Anthony Walter McGill of Walnut, Calif.
McGill, 26, was assigned to the 192nd Infantry Brigade.
Authorities said the soldier in basic training collapsed Tuesday while on a two-mile run during a physical fitness test. He was immediately assisted by military personnel and taken to the hospital, where he never regained consciousness.
Monica Manganaro, a public affairs spokeswoman at the post, said the death remains under investigation.
The death comes more than a week after a soldier was hit by shrapnel and suffered a minor wound to the neck on a firing range.
Post officials wouldn't speculate on the death. Alex Gibbs, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, said while the high Tuesday was only 81 degrees, eight below normal, humidity was basically 100 percent, or high humidity the whole day. It could pose a concern for overheating.
"When there is more humidity, you sweat a lot faster," Gibbs said. "You sweat and that sweat that's on your body is not able to evaporate to cool your body. If you can't get that water off your body and cool like it's supposed to do, you will probably overheat."
In high humidity, Gibbs said people outside should stay hydrated, drinking plenty of water.
