Expensive sports obsession reveals skewed priorities | Columbus Ledger-Enquirer

I enjoy college football even if I do not worship at its altar every autumn weekend. I know also that college football generates a goodly amount of money for universities and colleges, and it must also be admitted that a college football program costs a great deal of money. My letter is prompted by the contract for Auburn's head football coach as well as what the University of Arkansas was prepared to offer to lure him away.

How much does Auburn pay a fully-tenured professor with a Ph.D.? If an Auburn professor won a Nobel Prize, would thousands of students gather at Toomer's Corner? Has Auburn University, in common with countless other universities and colleges, forgotten that it is supposed to be a place of learning (as opposed to training, which appears to be the way that many colleges and universities are going)?

Doctors, who can save our lives, as well as artists, writers and musicians who enrich immeasurably our lives, are not nearly as valued by our society as a football coach. It is true that we value what we pay for, and this casts a great pall over American society and what it values most. It is all too sad to think about.

Election fraud

Accolades must be given to Chuck Williams for his reporting on Phenix City’s District #2 Special Election voter and election fraud. State of Alabama Voter Registration Form NVRA-1B/ 2 specifically designates chronologically the voter’s address where they live, where they receive their mail, and former address where they were last registered to vote. This voter registration form constitutes a sworn affidavit because the registering voter must sign to affirm that everything that he/she contests to is legal and truthful. Under the signature is a disclaimer stating that any false swearing is a felony and subject upon conviction up to five years in prison!

These businessmen and women are the who’s who in Phenix City who possess college degrees and real estate licenses. In particular, Matthew Mixon (President of Phenix Board of Realtors) and Margaret Moss (Board of Directors of Phenix Board of Realtors) voted to allocate an unprecedented $4,900 plus from the Alabama Association of Realtors Super PAC on request by the Phenix City Board of Realtors for just a municipal District race. The Phenix City Board of Realtors Association Executive Christopher Lammons, who actually lives in Auburn, registered to vote using Phenix Board of Realtors Main Office as his address. It is a meeting place, it has no living quarters and is not zoned residential, but commercial!

Nepotism involves Phenix City Board of Registrars member Gary Head who is also a qualifying real estate broker and council candidate Baxley Oswalt. Their District Attorney is related to one of the 84 offenders. Their City Attorney lives in District #1, but voted in District #2. This voting infraction has been committed even through the last Presidential election which constitutes the Department of Justice involvement. Through discovery they may find that the 3 Board members of Registrars had been complicit!

You’ve been had

It’s a sad situation that the average folks who voted for this president have been snookered. If they are only half brain dead, they might be slowly coming to the realization that they have been sold a bill of goods.

The current administration is bent on consolidation of control and wealth at the top. Regulations to protect everyone from the abuses of power are being purged, along with hopes for affordable health coverage. Taxes will, in a matter of years, go up for the middle class and down for the 1 percenters. Laws to protect the environment, which are for the good of everyone, are being erased in favor of big business. Telecommunications, i.e., the internet, may soon be two-tiered with the big shots getting preferential treatment. The fact that about 30 percent of Americans still support this mentally challenged “Twitterer in chief” continues to amaze me. Why not just sign over your children to the fat cats at the top? They just about control everything already and Trump, though pretending to be a friend of the downtrodden, is helping the true elites consolidate their power.

Who would have believed a spoiled rich kid from New York City would be a champion for the average Joes? Suckers, that’s who. Anybody out there now having buyers’ remorse? So you got drunk and went to bed with a scoundrel. Now you’re going to wake up and see just what a mistake you’ve made. Better luck next time.

Long overdue

Can someone explain to me why Congress has a 14% approval rating but, last year, a 98% re-election rate? They stay in office longer than some Third World dictators.

The Georgia legislature can get the ball rolling by passing a resolution to propose a term-limits amendment. Once 34 states made their applications, the American people will be empowered to bring term limits to Washington.

Support S.R. 195 and demand a vote for the bill that would make term limits on Congress a part of our Constitution.
